STRIVE is a scholarship and motivational program targeted to high school seniors who want to improve their present educational status and their life prospects. Students academically ranked in the lower one-third of the class often have the same natural abilities and gifts as those who are in the upper two-thirds of the class. The difference is often motivation, attendance, work habits, self-esteem and success in the classroom.
STRIVE is dedicated to addressing these factors. During the academic year, Rotarians host regular encouragement meetings and develop mentor relationships with STRIVE students. At the end of the year, the students are measured against their own personal improvement and qualify to receive a twelve-week summer job, a cash completion award, and a STRIVE certificate and awards dinner. College scholarships are awarded to the students showing the most improvement during their senior year.
High school seniors who are in the lower one-third of their class are eligible to qualify for STRIVE by signing a form committing to the four A’s: Academics – achieving a minimum “C” average in senior-year courses. Attendance – maintaining a 90% attendance level. Attitude – demonstrating appropriate conduct and a positive attitude in work and social activities. Altruism - providing five hours of community service. STRIVE is a proven way to make a difference (five years of proven success) in the performance of students. School leaders and teachers pointed to notable improvements in increase self-esteem, confidence, and motivations.
Many students discovered that when they attended class and worked a little harder they had success in the classroom. Many also made the decision to go on to college. Statistically, 75-80% of those who made the commitment to STRIVE criteria improved their GPA and had a 91 % attendance average.
